About Today Readings

1st Sunday of Advent

Isaiah 63:16–17; 64:1, 3–8. Lord, make us turn to you, let us see your face and we shall be saved – Psalm 79(80):2–3, 15–16, 18–19. 1 Corinthians 1:3–9. Mark 13:33–37.

Alert to the presence of God

The first Sunday of Advent coincides with the Feast of St Francis Xavier. In today’s reading, the ‘man travelling abroad’ is God, and Jesus tells his disciples that they should be on the watch for God’s return.

‘Alertness for God’ might also be a theme for the priestly life of Xavier, in both his availability for mission to the Far East and his ministry and evangelisation among the peoples he met there. As a companion once wrote of this prodigious saint, ‘Anything he is asked to do, Francis does willingly, simply because he loves everyone’.

We pray as we begin our journey towards Christmas that we might also be alert for the presence of God in our lives, and that we may be open to responding when we are invited to connect with others in the same loving spirit as St Francis.
