Peace to the world
The image in Isaiah of ‘flowing peace, like a river’ is as compelling now as it was to the people of the prophet’s day. We long for peace, in our world, our communities, our hearts. Yet, we are aware of conflict abounding, discord, and disunity. In the letter of St Paul to the Galatians we are reminded of how God’s self enters this world of violence. The boast of Paul is not of a victory in violence, but a victory over violence.
‘The kingdom of God is very near to you’, Jesus instructs the disciples to proclaim. He is clear that there will be rejection from those unwilling to engage a message of peace. But the kingdom remains near in the person of Jesus. So, like the disciples, we are invited to draw on our relationship with the Prince of Peace and go and offer peace to the world.
