About Today Readings

22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jeremiah 20:7-9. My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God – Psalm 62(63):2-6, 8-9. Romans 12:1-2. Matthew 16:21-27.

By giving ourselves over to God’s plan for us, we become truly alive to God

Today’s readings make me think about the folly of making plans and thinking that you have everything under control. Life, and God, just don’t work that way.

Often the things that disturb our plans become the experiences that are most valuable to us. The stories of holidays and special events derailed, while difficult at the time, become the ones we share again and again with laughter in later years. They remind us about what’s important, and bring us closer to each other.

The disciples of Jesus had an idea in their mind of how their lives might go, and didn’t want those plans disrupted. Jesus knows that holding on to our vision for our lives is folly. Giving ourselves over to God’s plan for us – losing our lives for God’s sake – is the only way that we can be truly alive to God.
