I am the gate

Jesus is both the good shepherd and the gate for the sheepfold. What could this mean for us? In one sense, Jesus guides us and leads us, showing us the way to go and the good pasture ahead. He guards us from evil and holds our hand through times of darkness and pain. Yet, in another sense, his life is the gate through which we will find life and safety. This may not always mean restful waters, but experiencing the paschal mystery for ourselves. With Jesus, we proclaim the Reign of God, bear persecution, endure death and rise again to new life. Jesus’ path is a Christian path of despair that leads to hope and fear that leads to safety. Let us look to him today either as our guide or our fellow-traveller, promising life to the full and a home in God’s house for ever and ever.
