On the path to holiness
Poor Jeremiah! He was treated so badly by those he had come to warn. He tried to stop speaking what the Lord wanted him to say but it did not work. God’s spirit in his heart kept prompting him to speak out against their behaviour because it would bring them to disaster, they would be captured and taken into exile. Prophets are compelled to speak by God’s desire to be heard. To ignore the compulsion would bring deep psychological and spiritual pain. The beautiful psalm that follows is used in many liturgical settings and always for feasts of those who did God’s bidding such as Mary Magdalene. ‘My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God.’ When life is unimaginable outside of doing God’s will, we are truly on the pathway to holiness. This is when the kingdom of God becomes a reality for us. When our love for others reflects heaven, we are on our God pathway.
