God is our safe place
What does it mean to really know somebody? There are contrasting ideas in today’s scripture. The people in Jesus’ hometown think they know him. They have watched him grow up; Joseph was a familiar figure to them. Yet Jesus has just returned from 40 days in the wilderness during which he sorted out some basic priorities. It was confronting when these did not match the role assigned to him. In contrast, God tells the prophet Jeremiah that he has known him since before he was born. Really known him. And now he is being sent to do something unexpected and extraordinary. There is a challenge for us here. God wants us to grow, to change, to respond to the fresh challenges our faith presents, even if this threatens other people. The psalm asks God to be ‘a rock where I can take refuge.’ God is our safe place more than the opinions of others.
