Like treasure hidden in a field
They say that ‘money can’t buy happiness’ and don’t we love to ridicule the greedy or dysfunctional antics of the rich? However, Jesus uses someone hungry for material things to illustrate what it is like to hunger for God’s reign. There is a parable in everything and everyone. When I see someone desperate for a promotion or a fancy new gadget or a ritzy lifestyle, perhaps I can think of how desperate I am for God. As Psalm 42:1 says, “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.” How does my soul experience every moment of the day as an encounter with God? How can my soul be open to God’s messages in all the media I consume, all the people I communicate with, all the hustle and bustle of life?
