About Today Readings

23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Wisdom 9:13-18. In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge – Psalm 89(90):3-6, 12-14. Philemon 9-10, 12-17. Luke 14:25-33.

None of you can be my disciple without giving up all he owns

Jesus seems to be asking the impossible. The apostles may have thought: ‘Hey, I did that, but it doesn’t seem such a big deal. I met Jesus who had such integrity, passion and love for everyone that I just wanted to be with him.’

The old idea of detachment was equally harsh. It sounded as if I had to tear myself away from family and friends and no longer care about them. I had to stop doing anything enjoyable and live a spartan existence.

It is all about the heart. When the love of Jesus and the desire to live with Jesus for the Father and for others becomes central, everything else finds its place. It is more a rearranging of priorities. Some things become unimportant and fall away. Other things become peripheral.
