About Today Readings

Easter Sunday

Acts 10:34, 37-43. This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad – Ps 117(118):1-2, 16-17, 22-23. Colossians 3:1-4 / 1 Corinthians 5:6-8. John 20:1-9.

Share the joy

When we were young, one of the local priests made us laugh. He didn’t mean to. He was doubtless a prayerful person and helped others as much as he could. But his voice was funereal and his face like that of an undertaker, never more so when the scripture was joyful. Easter was a special challenge for him. ‘Our hearts are glad,’ he would intone, like a doctor delivering bad news. ‘We are so happy,’ he said, sounding miserable.

The Gospels record a kaleidoscope of emotions in those who encounter the Risen Lord. There is excitement, confusion, anticipation, relief, joy, amazement, understanding and, above all, an urgent need to share the story. The Risen Lord creates community, often urging peace on people experiencing an array of emotions all at the same time. You can’t have Resurrection faith on your own. Easter Sunday is a day to let our hearts run wild. As the Letter to the Colossians says, ‘he is your life’.
