We are called to humility and service

Jesus says something profound about who God is not, by defining who not to imitate. God is not one to tie up heavy burdens and lay them on our shoulders, without offer of relief. Rather God might be recognised in one of his disciples, in the words of St Paul, ‘like a mother feeding and looking after her own children’. This is a tender image of how we are called to be with each other, ‘devoted and protective’, having come to love each other so much.

Jesus calls us to humility and service. We are not called to live burdened by expectations that deny our humanity but are invited into the freedom that allows us to live in communities of love. Today, we might consider how we help relieve the burden of those around us, how do we invite people into the freedom that allows them to live full lives?
