About Today Readings

32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

2 Maccabees 7:1-2, 9-14. Lord, when your glory appears, my joy will be full – Psalm 16(17):1, 5-6, 8, 15. 2 Thessalonians 2:16 – 3:5. Luke 20:27-38.

God is our full life and joy

The seven brothers tortured for their faith give witness that when we believe in a life-giving God, we can be free of the fear of death, and of attachment to what we normally think of as essential (like our speech and our hands). All created things are good and given to us for life, but their value cannot compare to the One who created them and gives them: in God is our full life and joy. In her diaries, the Dutch Holocaust victim, Etty Hillesum, likewise shows us this truth as she found life and joy in the midst of deprivation, suffering and death. It is a worthwhile exercise to contemplate the potential loss of our ‘treasures’ and to imagine how we would respond, as a creature, and in our faith.
