We are called to life-giving relationships
In today’s Gospel some Pharisees are asking about marriage laws. Mostly, it seems, they want to catch Jesus out. But in doing so their starting point isn’t a consideration of right relationship, let alone love. Rather it is about what they can get away with, what ‘Moses allowed us’. Jesus points to the fullness of relationship, even as it imposes duties and obligations.
We can be aware of relationships where ‘the rules’ seem misapplied. For those who struggle in marriage, we should have great compassion. Our starting point, though, should be the principle that Jesus points to, that we are called into relationships that are life-giving and in which we are called to live with reciprocity. It is something of this openness to life and relationship, without agenda and self-seeking, that we might suspect Jesus sees in the children who were brought to see him.
