23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Ezekiel 33:7-9. O that today you would listen to his voice! Harden not your hearts – Ps 94(95):1-2, 6-9. Romans 13:8-10. Matthew 18:15-20.
Responsibility and trust
The first reading is about the responsibility a priest has to offer moral guidance to his people. It’s a reminder that our salvation is linked to those around us – we are responsible for helping them take the righteous path, even if we will not be responsible if they choose to ignore our help.
In the Gospel, we see the trust Jesus places in his disciples to discern God’s will for themselves. He offers a pathway for discernment – from individual to small group, to whole community – and gives his trust to the disciples that if ‘two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them’.
Let us pray today that we are worthy of God’s trust and the responsibilities that are placed on us.
