Body and Blood of Christ

Deuteronomy 8:2-3, 14-16. Praise the Lord, Jerusalem – Ps 147:12-15, 19-20. 1 Corinthians 10:16-17. John 6:51-58.

Eat my flesh and drink my blood

Angela: Jesus, this talk of eating your flesh and drinking your blood was pretty yuk. You were really speaking about something very spiritual, weren’t you?

Jesus: Well, the Romans were about to whip my body and spread my blood around the city, and I was inviting my disciples to come together to follow me. The Eucharist gathers you together, calling you to do as I did. But I’m not sure if that’s what you mean by ‘very spiritual’, Angela.

Angela: Not really. But you were speaking to the crowd, not just to your disciples, Lord. What did you want them to hear?

Jesus: I wanted them to hear that my Father was offering them life through me, and that they needed to hear and follow me, not just nod and move on. For them, my message was one of life and death. But you are my disciple, too, aren’t you Angela?
