Pentecost Sunday
Acts 2:1-11. Lord, send out your Spirit and renew the face of the earth – Ps 103(104):1, 24, 29-31, 34. Romans 8:8-17. John 14:15-16, 23-26.
Jesus promised to send an advocate to help us on our pilgrim journey
At Pentecost the apostles received the Holy Spirit in a very startling way. We too receive this advocate at our Baptism and Confirmation. This same spirit brings us the gifts to assist us: wisdom, understanding and right judgement to guide our minds, fortitude to carry on through difficult or unpopular situations, awe and wonder at God and his magnificent creation.
The fruits of the spirit – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control – ripen within, helping us live with our fellow brothers and sisters.
Wind and fire are very powerful symbols – think of the wind in the sails of a yacht, the fire purifying precious metals. They symbolise the power of God, and we need this energy, courage and love to continue Jesus’ work on earth.
