Third Sunday of Lent
St John of God

God’s ongoing presence with us
In today’s first reading, the people complain against Moses. We can hear their grumbles. We know them as our own. Often the gifts we have received, or at least our awareness of them, wears off. We feel uncertain. The hardships seem to become heavier than the blessings. God’s response suggests the way he always wants to be in relationship with us. He gives the people what they need, which is water, but with it a sense of his abiding care and presence.
In the Gospel we read of the need for water, and the gift of presence. Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well. Ironic misunderstanding and, slowly, recognition. Jesus offers ‘living water’, which is in some sense his ongoing presence with us. Jesus helps draw this woman to the belief that makes possible awareness of his presence. Jesus, how are you drawing me to believe today? Help my unbelief.
