About Today Readings

27th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Isaiah 5:1-7. The vineyard of the Lord is the House of Israel – Psalm 79(80):9, 12-16, 19-20. Philippines 4:6-9. Matthew 21:33-43.

We need the potency and peace of prayerful time

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things. 

How wonderfully hopeful and uplifting are Paul’s words to the Philippians. In our busy, fragmented and intrusive world we need to the power of prayer as a ballast against anxieties and addictions which can consume us. We need the pause and potency and peace of prayerful time to quieten our bodies and souls so that a calm and purposeful spiritual energy is available to us, not an energy that is combustible and wreaks havoc. We are asked to raise our hearts and minds to the higher things, to transcend the murk and mire, to know that at all times we are heard and seen and loved by God.
