About Today Readings

23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Isaiah 35:4-7. Praise the Lord, my soul! – Psalm 145(146):7-10. James 2:1-5. Mark 7:31-37.

Explosion of joy

There have been moments in life when I have felt my heart bursting with joy and delight. I wonder if the author of the psalm had similar experiences when his words explode, ‘Praise the Lord, my soul!’ Life is good, the world is good. They are often fleeting moments, a sunny morning in late autumn strolling among the carpet of fallen leaves, or sitting in silence with a friend and watching the world pass by. I wonder if the deaf mute in today’s Gospel, when healed by Jesus, exploded with ‘Praise the Lord, my soul! I can hear and speak’. Our soul is often at one with the soul of creation. Our soul is one with God and therefore one with every person alive today. St James, in today’s letter, says God chose the poor, all of us, to be heirs of the kingdom if we love him. ‘Praise the Lord, my soul!’
