Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Isaiah 6:1-2, 3-8. In the sight of the angels I will sing your praises, Lord – Psalm 137(138):1-5, 7-8. 1 Corinthians 15:1-11. Luke 5:1-11.
Here I am, Lord!
One of the beautiful hymns we often sing at Mass is ‘Here I am, Lord!’ This hymn reminds us that we can love and be loved by God, even when we are not our best selves, as long as we keep trying to improve and are truly contrite.
This notion is reprised in the reading from Isaiah where he speaks of seeing the six-winged seraphim. He needs to repent for his unclean lips, and atonement is made when an angel sears his mouth with a hot coal. Once Isaiah has been purified by the angel he says to God, ‘Here am I!’ in response to God’s question as to who he will send out as his prophet and messenger.
Today, we are still being asked by God, ‘Who shall I send?’ Can we put our hands on our hearts and say, ‘Here I am, Lord!’? Can we be faithful messengers of his love to those we meet on this life’s pilgrimage?
