Jesus belongs first to his Father God

A book emerged last year written by Austen Ivereigh, a well-known biographer of Pope Francis, titled First Belong to God and sub-titled ‘On Retreat with Pope Francis’. It is a rich collection of spiritual reflections and stories echoing Francis’ connections with Ignatian spiritual exercises over many years, including his pre-Vatican years in Buenos Aires. In the wilderness Jesus is tempted to belong first to Satan and all will be well. But no, Jesus belongs first to his Father God, and forever will. His human ancestors had learned to belong first to God rather than Pharoah. And they found milk and honey in the land to which God had brought them. Satan will return to Jesus at an opportune time. Satan thought he had won when the spear pierced Christ’s side on Calvary, but was to learn otherwise on Easter morn.
