About Today Readings

St Teresa of the Child Jesus

Job 19:21-27. I believe I shall see the good things of the Lord in the land of the living – Psalm 26(27):7-9, 13-14. Luke 10:1-12.

I am sending you out like lambs among wolves

Many people to-day are like defenceless lambs in the face of violence and hatred. When militants stormed an MSF maternity hospital in Kabul this year, 24 mothers and newborn babies were killed, with another 20, including nurses, injured. One hundred were protected in safe rooms.

During Black Lives Matter protests in Washington DC, TV crews were assaulted by police and hit by tear gas canisters. Systemic racism still affects Australia’s Indigenous people. There have been 432 Indigenous deaths in custody since the Royal Commission in 1991.

Whistle-blowers in Australia have little legal protection. It takes a person of uncommon courage to reveal abuses of power and unethical actions by government and corporations.

Homeless veterans, victims of domestic violence and youth are ignored by governments more inclined to fund their middle-class supporters.

Am I willing to speak truth to power? Can I challenge a racist joke? Do I advocate on behalf of the poor?
