About Today Readings

Genesis 17:3-9. The Lord remembers his covenant for ever – Ps 104(105):4-9. John 8:51-59.

I am

Today’s readings look at the nature of the covenant and the nature of God. In the Genesis passage, God establishes his everlasting covenant with Abraham and his descendants. He will be their God and they will be his Chosen People. In John’s Gospel, Jesus is challenged by the Pharisees who continue to try and catch him out or kill him as he is challenging the status quo and upsetting the worldview they represent. He tells them that he existed before Abraham, an idea that they cannot fathom. He aligns himself with the Father as Son but states I am as his clear and certain admission that he too is God. The Pharisees try to stone him for this blasphemy, but he manages to escape because it is not yet his appointed time.
