We are never alone

If you have seen it on stage or film or heard the lyrics to the Lloyd Webber/ Rice musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, you will have a good understanding of today’s Reading from Genesis.

Despite his brutal treatment of being sold as a slave by his siblings, his uncanny ability to interpret dreams, his ascension to greatness as Pharoah’s second in command, Joseph has never stopped loving his father and brothers. With a couple of plot twists and Joseph’s capacity for forgiveness, the family are finally reunited.

Thus begins the story of the Israelites in Egypt which will later become the story of their slavery, Moses and the Exodus. In the beautiful song ‘Close Every Door’ as Joseph is imprisoned and wonders what will become of him, he reminds the audience, us, that the answers lie far from this world.
