The place where God desires to dwell

The early church had a problem with food offered to idols. It was a ‘sign of their times’ they had to deal with. And ‘idols’ seem to emerge in every age. Pope Leo’s recent encyclical on the grandeur of humanity (Magnifica humanitas) suggests the ‘idol’ of artificial intelligence is the enticing idol of our time. Every generation, the Pope argues, faces the risk of building a more inhuman and unjust world. Technology has the power to heal, connect, educate and protect our common home; but it can also divide, exclude and generate new forms of injustice (#9). The encyclical challenges the world once again to recognise the human heart as the place where God desires to dwell (#16). Would the algorithm of artificial intelligence suggest the answer the Lord gives in today’s Gospel to love your enemies and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return? I suspect not.
