About Today Readings

Jeremiah 7:23-28. If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts – Ps 94(95):1-2, 6-9. Luke 11:14-23.

Open our hearts and minds

A few months ago, Harvard Professor Avi Loeb was speaking about an anomalous interstellar object, 3I/Atlas, and said the true mark of science was humility, the ability to remain unassuming and authentically curious. He asked, how can we be sure the object is not a manufactured item, and his musings sparked controversy.

In today’s reading from Jeremiah, the prophet links stubbornness, and a refusal to be disciplined, to the suppression of truth. Uncertainty is to pride an intolerable toxin. In the Gospel reading, critics try to smear Jesus with the charge of deviltry. Jesus refutes them with a perfectly reasoned argument: why would his healings be the work of one demon against another, and if so, he tells them, surely it spells disaster for the progeny of Hell. Not that they would be listening – again, hard hearts are fortified by closed minds.

Lord, keep us humble, curious and rational in faith.
