Pay it forward

There are cafes and eateries that espouse the ‘pay it forward’ ethos. That is, they will have a board where someone who wants a coffee or light meal but cannot pay for it will be able to use a voucher paid for by a previous patron. These patrons may once have been the beneficiary of a good deed themselves and find they want to continue the cycle of generosity by doing a good deed for others.

In this they are the direct opposite of the servant in today’s Gospel who, though he received generosity and mercy from his master in the form of debt cancellation, did not show like to the person who owed him money.

So instead of an ongoing cycle of generosity and good deeds, we have threats and violence. And then, when the original master finds out, mercy is withdrawn from the first servant.

When we sow generously, we reap generously.
