Holy Thursday

If I have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet
The Gospel for Holy Thursday confronts us with a powerful image of servant leadership. In washing the disciples’ feet, Jesus performs an act reserved for the lowliest of servants and slaves. As a profound symbol of self-emptying love, the washing of the feet still has the power to shock, as it did Peter and the other disciples.
Further, the act of washing another’s feet is an awkward and sometimes messy action. It reminds us that the Gospel is an uncomfortable and awkward message in a world where people’s worth is measured in terms of status, power and wealth. In such a world, the humblest of gestures takes on a whole new meaning.
