St Maximilian Kolbe
Joshua 3:7-11, 13-17. Alleluia! – Ps 113A(114):1-6. Matthew 18:21 – 19:1.
The Lord will keep his promise
In the Readings of the day, the prophet Joshua announces to the Israelites that the Lord is faithful. Today is also the feast day of St Maximilian Kolbe, a martyr who gave his life for a stranger. Reflecting on this tragic event we can hear the voice of the prophet resonate across the ages. The murder of St Kolbe by the Nazis ended his earthly life, but now and forever he rests with the Lord. Made whole and perfect again, he feels no pain and his suffering is comparative to Jesus, who sacrificed himself not just for one but for all and forever. As Jesus rose again, St Kolbe is exalted and lifted up as a symbol of overcoming evil and even death itself. His example, his discipleship, offers us all courage to endure evil and persecution, knowing that the Lord will keep his promise and that the Light will wipe away all evil and darkness. Believe in the words of the prophet and cross whatever barrier is holding you back. St Kolbe – Pray for us all.
