Hebrews 3:7-14. If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts – Psalm 94(95):6-11. Mark 1:40-45.
‘Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts’.
This is such a familiar injunction, and yet it is one that convicts me every time. First, it requires open ears, in order to be able to hear God’s voice in the first place. That still, quiet voice that can often get drowned out by louder, flashier voices that tell us what we want to hear, rather than what we need to hear. We want to hear that it is our right to spend our money on buying the latest and the best, that it is not our job to alleviate poverty. But the voice of God tells us to hunger after justice and righteousness, to share what we have been given, to be the good Samaritan. And when we hear that, we may feel our heart constrict in fear. But God is faithful and can be trusted. God offers abundant life-giving waters if only we open ourselves to him.Email this Print This Page
