The wonder of Mary’s role

For me, the Magnificat is one of the Bible’s most beautiful pieces of writing. It is a reminder to us of the wonder of Mary’s role in Jesus’ life. All too often, our Church makes women feel less than men and does not allow them to fulfil the roles that they feel called to. I have recently been studying the early Celtic church, and so much resonates with me. Women were respected and took on the same roles as men. It was the Roman church that slowly over the centuries imposed a patriarchal church – a church that arose from a pre-Christian Roman society where men were dominant. Any wonder a society where women were equal was confronting. Today, on the Feast of the Assumption, I believe our challenge is to continue to make our way back to the early Celtic church where everyone was equal and each voice truly heard.
