Choose life

Summer in Australia can be hard on the country’s flora and fauna, especially this year as we again experience the El Nino weather pattern. El Nino is primarily felt in eastern Australian, resulting in warmer and drier conditions. Trees are nature’s barometer of health. By looking at the leaves you can tell instantly if the tree has enough water and sun. In today’s psalm the second verse speaks of a healthy tree – one ‘that is planted beside the flowing waters, that yields its fruit in due season and whose leaves shall never fade’. It’s a beautiful image, and one that conjures the joy and contentment of life. It ties in with the clear meaning of the first reading and psalm. We can find life if we are obedient to the commandments. Obedience brings blessings, disobedience brings curses. It is not an easy path to follow but the rewards are there.
