How to pray
The Lord’s prayer is more than a beautiful set of words. It is a recipe for an entire way of life. Every part of it reflects Jesus’ own experience. He was so close to the Father that God’s will was inseparable from his own. He spoke creatively about the kingdom of God. He fed people in many ways, knowing that gratitude for our daily bread means openness to the source of all life. He knew temptation. He practised forgiveness, even as he was being crucified. In other words, when he was asked to teach his friends how to pray, he gave them a guide for prayerful living. It was a model which draws our relationship with God from our experience of life with all its ups and downs, all its light and shade. We all need to be freed from evil, however varied our encounters with darkness may be.
