About Today Readings

Thu 16th. St Abraham Kidunaia. Jr 17:5-10; Lk 16:19-31.

In this special Lenten series – Darkness to light: An intimate journey with Jesus – our guest writer looks to the Gospel stories for answers to the questions that many of us ask when faced with difficult times.

‘The poor man died and was carried away by the angels to the bosom of Abraham.’Luke 16:22

How I wish right now that I were Lazarus, so loved by God. But I do not wish for his destitution and disease. I fear I am like the rich man, living a rich life on a planet where so many millions have nothing. Lord, soften my heart. Help me to fall into helplessness. Help me to fall in love. Help me to be brave. In this Lenten journey I sometimes feel full of hope, but then I suspect this is only a delusion. I struggle to see any beauty in the death of my beloved and I fall into depression. Julian of Norwich tells us “First there is the fall, and then we recover from the fall. Both are the mercy of God!” Help me persevere Lord. Help me be patient. Help me accept my wounds so that I may feel your healing.
