About Today Readings

Acts 22:30; 23:6-11. Keep me safe, O God; you are my hope – Psalm 15(16):1-2, 5, 7-11. John 17:20-26.

God, give us the courage to meet your challenge

The Acts of the Apostles is the best kind of adventure story. There is doubt, faltering, acts of cowardice, but on the other hand surety in the face of opposition, great faith and courage. And along the way there are last-minute escapes or clever distractions, as in today’s first reading when Paul manages to pit the Sadducees and Pharisees against one another so that they almost forget Paul entirely, leaving the saint to ‘live to fight another day’. And this time the Lord is sending Paul to bear witness in the alien city of Rome.
Today, let us pray for the courage to take up God’s challenge to go where we are sent, to witness for God’s love and peace in what we say and do.
