How to pray
I now lead in a Catholic Primary School context, and our children (as with most children in Catholic Primary Schools) know the ‘Our Father’ by rote, so much so that they always say ‘Amen’ when at Mass before the next bit. This was also in a Gospel read in February and we had a Year 6 Class mass at the Parish Church. Our wonderful priest prayed this prayer slowly and deliberately with them and the parishioners present. While the children’s learned behaviour was to say it fast, this slowing down and pondering the words enabled them to focus on this prayer in a different way. How often do we learn what we are expected to learn without actually considering the intent and context? Jesus taught us this prayer with all the elements of peaceful and harmonious co-existence for our world – holiness; kingdom of God on earth; nourishment; forgiveness and saving Grace.
