About Today Readings

St Elizabeth of Hungary

Apocalypse 5:1-10. The Lamb has made us a kingdom of priests to serve our God – Psalm 149:1-6, 9. Luke 19:41-44.

Jesus wants what is best for us

Parents understand the challenge of foreseeing dangers that lie ahead of their children, and still allowing them the freedom to explore, choose and be surprised by them. We teach the basics of risk management like wearing a helmet and looking both ways before crossing roads, but eventually the training wheels come off and they venture out on their own. Jesus weeps over us because he knows that we don’t always select the best path for ourselves. We merge into the fast lane of life without doing a head check, we occupy ourselves with so many things, that we don’t recognise God in the everyday ordinariness. Jesus wants what is best for his closest friends but he also knows that we have the freedom and responsibility to choose what brings us peace.
