About Today Readings

St Robert Bellarmine; St Hildegard of Bingen

1 Corinthians 15:1-11. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good – Ps 117(118):1-2, 15-17, 28. Luke 7:36-50.

God gives us many gifts and talents

There are ties between Paul’s letter to the Corinthians and Hildegard von Bingen (whose feast day is today). Both experienced visions and travelled around preaching and teaching. When I was a teenager, my father tried to interest me in Hildegard. He played her music and told me a little about her (he wanted me to know about strong woman in the church who had not let the church patriarchy keep them down), but I didn’t really listen. A few years ago, I rediscovered her music and fell in love with it. I listen to her chants as I draw or paint sometimes and she inspires me. And yet, her music was only one of her gifts. She followed her interests and talents and inspired others. She reminds us to see ourselves and those around us as full of many gifts and talents given by God.
