Faith provides nurture and nourishment

‘I am the bread of life.’ We try all kinds of things to feed our inner hungers. Too much food, drink, work, gambling, gossip, judgment, attention-seeking, consumerism, attention to appearances, escapism. It is a long list and, if we are honest, we will all find items on it that we can relate to. We are all imprisoned in one way or another. The message of Jesus is radical and simple. Faith in God helps us find the nurture and nourishment we crave. There’s plenty of junk food available for the soul and, as with greasy fried chicken, it fills a gap for a time but leaves us feeling worse. God is more like a fresh salad, full of colours and tastes. Jesus says, ‘The bread that I shall give is my flesh for the life of the world.’ He is ‘living bread’, not stale.
