Discerning God’s voice

Ever heard of Religious Socks? Well, there’s a company that makes religious socks from a wide array of saints or Catholic figures, most of which feature an icon, images related to their story and, on the sole, a quote or prayer attributed to them. In today’s Gospel, we hear the story where Joseph discovered Mary was with child. Joseph chose mercy over shame. God’s messenger revealed that the child would be Emmanuel, ‘God with us’. Joseph’s response is striking. He listens, believes and acts. He trusts in God’s larger purpose. He remains silent. So, on the sole of the St Joseph socks, there is no quote. There is quiet surrender. How do we listen and discern God’s voice in our lives?
