Deuteronomy 30:15-20. Happy are they who hope in the Lord – Psalm 1:1-4, 6. Luke 9:22-25.
Teach me to be generous
To live we must sacrifice. Jesus offers each person a choice. The decision to enter into discipleship is complete. In denying your desires for God’s can be painful and in some cases be a daily challenge for a long time. As we are transformed and become more like him our desire to serve other strengthens. The sacrifices required of us to love as he does removes any concern about the cost. St Ignatius’ prayer for generosity is a reminder of today’s reading and may capture the essence of his teaching. ‘Teach me to be generous. Teach me to serve as you deserve, to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds, to labour and not to seek to rest, to give of myself and not ask for a reward, except the reward of knowing that I am doing your will’.
