Our relationship with God is always moving and growing
There is a great deal of frustration in today’s readings. Jesus is frustrated by his closest friends. In Mark’s Gospel, they have witnessed the feeding of two enormous crowds, with plenty of food left over. They know the precise number of baskets that were filled. Yet they don’t appreciate the deeper message of what really feeds us. We are not nourished by getting caught up in the self-serving pettiness of the likes of Herod and the Pharisees.
In the story of Noah, which belongs to pre-history, God is so frustrated with humankind that God regrets having made us and decides to send a flood to get rid of us. In both cases, frustration leads to a fresh relationship. After the flood, God sets a rainbow in the sky as a sign of a covenant that will never end. In the next part of Mark’s Gospel, Jesus opens the eyes of the blind, just as he opens ours. Our relationship with God is never stagnant.
