God wants to share our burden
The words of today’s Gospel have been loved for centuries. ‘Come to me and I will give you rest.’ The Anglican book of common prayer includes them in every celebration of the Eucharist. We all feel overburdened at times. We all need rest. God wants to share our burden. The image of God’s yoke is poignant. It implies that we are harnessed together with God, both of us pulling in the same direction to plough a field or, as we might say these days, to create something positive to feed the hungers of humanity. The prophet Isaiah compares us to a mother giving birth. We experience pain and distress. Even this day may have moments of pain for us. The Lord shares our pain and helps us find the light not just at the end of the tunnel but also inside the tunnel. ‘The land of ghosts will give birth,’ says the prophet.
