About Today Readings

Judges 13:2-7, 24-25. Fill me with your praise and I will sing your glory – Psalm 70(71):3-6, 16-17. Luke 1:5-25.

Be open to God

In the history of Israel, our first reading from the Book of Judges reminds us, God breaks through in the most unlikely ways. Those who have been marginalised, those who seem least equipped, become bearers of his message.

Zechariah and Elizabeth, in our Gospel, are ‘worthy in the sight of God’, but they are ‘both getting on in years’, and Elizabeth understands her lack of children as a ‘humiliation’. They are not expecting a child. Even less that the angel of the Lord will announce that their son will be ‘filled with the Holy Spirit’, bringing many back to God.

Zechariah’s hesitation on hearing this is understandable. His inability to immediately receive this unexpected blessing invites us not to hesitate but to be open to the many ways God breaks into our lives. In what unlikely ways does God wish to be present to us today?
