About Today Readings

Hebrews 7:25 – 8:6. Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will – Psalm 39(40):7-10, 17. Mark 3:7-12.

You are the son of God

The unclean spirits seemed to be the ones who got the message most clearly. To the crowds who followed Jesus, he was many things: an object of curiosity, an itinerant preacher with a different kind of message, someone who had cured people of illnesses, giving hope to those still blind, paralysed or tormented.

Crowds are fickle and many who began following Jesus may have given up when he did not meet their expectations. The disciples, who had by now been on the road with Jesus for some time, were more prepared to go with the flow. They could focus on Jesus’ need to be protected from the crush of demanding humanity.

Who is Jesus for me? Is he someone to watch from a distance, or am I, like the disciples, a companion to him, walking with him, trying to be open to take the love and compassion of the Father to those I meet?
