St Joseph
2 Samuel 7:4-5, 12-14, 16. The son of David will live for ever – Ps 88(89):2-5, 27, 29. Romans 4:13, 16-18, 22. Matthew 1:16, 18-21, 24 / Luke 2:41-51.
Devoted to God’s will
Joseph you are that just man – that wise and loyal servant . . . This is the beginning of a prayer to St Joseph, that I often pray. Even though he may have been scared, Joseph was completely open to God. He showed wisdom by listening to God’s messages in dreams and making courageous decisions. Joseph was utterly devoted to God’s will, being selfless and loving with Jesus and Mary. The Scriptures do not reveal to us any words that were spoken by Joseph, yet his actions show justice, wisdom and loyalty. In the midst of Lent, there is a celebration of a man who gave his life for God. Let’s continue to celebrate the ways in which we can give ourselves to God – to be just, wise and loyal like Joseph.
