About Today Readings

Ss John de Brebeuf, Isaac Jogues & Cc; St Paul of the Cross

Romans 3:21-30. With the Lord there is mercy, and fullness of redemption – Psalm 129(130):1-6. Luke 11:47-54.

Alas for you . . . you have taken away the key of knowledge

Jesus was stirred up by abuse of power and he did not hold back. People in positions of authority such as religious leaders and lawyers were told in no uncertain terms that they would answer for their injustices. Lawyers were castigated for their failure to make the most of education and especially for preventing others from studying.

It brings to mind the tragedy for girls and women in Afghanistan. Prevented from going to high school or university, young girls are captive in their homes, unable even to walk in a park or play sport or music. As poverty has increased under the Taliban, young girls are sold in marriage.

In so many parts of the world, poverty prevents children being well educated. In times of famine, finding food, water and shelter takes priority. May we help however we can.
