My eyes have seen the salvation

There are two moments in today’s Gospel that have tugged at my heart strings recently. As is often the case with scripture, this is because they touch something in my own experience. The first is the tender and loving way that Simeon takes the baby Jesus into his arms. A good way to pray this passage is to pick up a pillow or cushion and imagine you, too, are holding a baby. It is such a moment of joy and anticipation. How will this one new life affect the human family? Of course, none of us will change the world the way Jesus did but, as St Paul says, the life and death of each of us has an influence on others. The second moment that warms my heart is the manner in which Simeon is able to let go. His faith has brought him to a point of deep acceptance and peace. Please God our faith will do the same.
