Amos 7:10-17. The judgments of the Lord are true and all of them just – Ps 18(19):8-11. Matthew 9:1-8.
The faith to believe
When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, ‘Courage, child, your sins are forgiven’ (Matthew 9:2). Like the first rain on drought-ridden land, Jesus’ words revitalise – a hope against hope. He calls to each of our hearts with the breeze of eternity, promising healing, reconciliation and the beckoning to a new future. In his forgiveness we are made new and clean.
In today’s Gospel reading, he commands the man to pick up his stretcher and walk; he is asking the paralytic to act in faith. Just as we are called to trust in Jesus’ forgiveness, we need courage to carry out what Jesus asks of us: to have the faith to believe.
Lord, give me the grace of courage to face that which you call me to, so that as I am forgiven I may believe it and walk in your grace.
