St Athanasius. Acts 15:7-21. Proclaim his marvellous deeds to all the nations – Psalm 95(96):1-3, 10. John 15:9-11.

Love your neighbour

God doesn’t want us to exclude people who are different. Apostle Peter invoked his position among the early Christians to remind them that he was chosen to spread the Good News to the gentiles. The more conservative James supported him in that assertion, quoting scripture to support the claim. Some of the world’s greatest activists for equality were Christians – people such as Dr Martin Luther King Jr and Nelson Mandela. There are myriad religious in Australia and the surrounding regions who serve the marginalised, the vulnerable and the excluded. Their efforts may go unsung, but their mission is clear and it’s a Christian one. Prejudice reflects culture, not religion. In the words of American poet Maya Angelou, ‘Prejudice is a burden that confuses the past, threatens the future and renders the present inaccessible’. Remember who your neighbour really is, who wants us to love them and why.
