Guardian Angels
Nehemiah 8:1-12. The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart – Ps 18(19):8-11. Matthew 18:1-5. 10.
Anyone who welcomes a little child . . .
Are angels only for children? Surely not. Yet this reading is all about the young and the young at heart. A child is the example of those who are ready to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. We are to welcome children in Jesus’ name and not despise them. Perhaps there is a message here to treat everyone gently and compassionately, especially those who are in any way vulnerable. We can too easily disparage adults even though they might be acting on the instincts they have learned as children. Children who are abused can become abusers. And we are called to be child-like as we encounter the world with awe, focusing on God and not looking down on anyone. Maybe we all need our angels to take on these big challenges. May our guardian angels help us to welcome children and be like children.
